How Creators Should Make Money

Hello there. Tim here.

You are beautiful.

This week's issue is brought to you by ConvertKit. This is my favorite product ever created.

1. An Entirely New Monetization Model for Creators

Last week, I gave you the step by step breakdown on how you can monetize a podcast. This method depends on gaining sponsorships, and I advocated using "The Tim Ferris Model" in your approach. As I've said before, sponsorships are a valid way to generate revenue.

This week, I want to tell you about a new approach. But first, some backstory.

Ethan and I are Buying a Company

In our most recent podcast, I told Ethan about an idea I had. You can listen to the episode (it comes out Wednesday) to get the full story, but here's the gist.

I stumbled across a SaaS product that has been neglected. I thought the product itself was great, so Ethan and I are forking up some cash to buy the company.

The company is a platform that allows you to turn your Twitter DM's into an automated sales machine. You can see it here.

The Plan

We will use the distribution of the podcast as a way to promote our product.

We won't have everything sorted out until the new year, but here's what you can expect.

  • each episode will feature an ad to OUR OWN product
  • during the episodes, we will share case studies
  • we will document the progress of our sales during the show, and give live updates on our progress

Your Opportunity

I'm not advocating that you spend thousands of dollars to buy a company. My suggestion is to start looking at your content through a different lens and start taking control of how you make your money.

You will make 10X more money if you use your content to sell your own products and services.

In short, have something to sell!

Use your content as an awareness platform to sell the products and services that YOU OWN!!

You will make more and you will be creating equity and value in an asset that you have a stake it.

Remember ... owning assets is how you get rich.

2. A Behind the Scenes Look at the Copyblogger Pod

In this week's episode, Tim and Ethan learn about Howard Luck Gossage, who was a brilliant ad man who saved the Grand Canyon. We also give a behind the scenes look at the business model of The Copyblogger Pod, as we brainstorm ways to monetize the show.

I always appreciate when people put their plans out in public and use it as a means to hold themselves accountable.

I don't know Dan, but my guess is that he hits his $1,000,000 goal.

4. Looking for a new way to boost your annual income?

You’re not alone: Over 65% of content creators make less than $10K a year. Are you ready to see revenue breakthrough this year?

So many creators like Sahil Bloom, Aquila Farrell, and Matt Ragland are finding long-term success by monetizing their content with digital products and pairing that with ConvertKit for lead generation, email automation, and selling those digital products.

Find out how top-earning creators are using ConvertKit Commerce to grow their income in 2022

5. Repetitions

When I watch this video, it's obvious that I am very much a beginner at Muay Thai.

But I am miles ahead of where I used to be.

It's like Arnold says ... "reps and sets."

6. I'll Never Stop Talking about Dollar Cost Averaging

For the last 10 months, all the investing dorks on Twitter have been ranting and raving about how awful things are. "THE SKY IS FALLING" jargon has been everywhere.

And like a good boy, I kept investing my $500 every week into the S&P500.

When the market goes up, you collect on your gains. When the market goes down, you buy low to create future gains.

As predicted, the S&P500 is back up again.

"The S&P 500 closes above its previous month's high for the first time in 2022."

Investing doesn't have to be complicated.

You don't need to be smart, but you do need to have the right temperament.

If you learn one thing from me, ever ... please let it be this lesson.

Ignore all the finance idiots on Twitter and create an automated investing schedule into index funds and then don't look at it. *(Not investment advice)*

Your future self will thank you.

7. Content Proofreading Tips to Help You Avoid Goofs

Traditionally, when I teach content proofreading tips, I treat them as separate tasks from content editing.

And they are indeed two different activities.

However, the creative benefits of a consistent proofreading process surpass the classic definition of proofreading and are important to learn even if you’re a beginner blogger.

A master proofreader’s skills contribute to the production of unique, valuable, and trustworthy content.

I've made it an entire year without once mentioning "culture war."

But I found this video and the subsequent comments fascinating, and I think you will too.

I'm passionate about entrepreneurship because innovation and entrepreneurship (mixed with regulation and *gasp* - government) is the driving force of progress. Entrepreneurship cares about one thing ... can you generate results?

Let's work together. Let's do business together. Let's unite on our shared experiences and accept the reality that we are all more alike than we are different.

We don't hate each other. Let's get to work!

10. Final Thought - "The Embarrassing Truth About Copyblogger Academy."

When I first started The Copyblogger Academy, I knew nothing about membership sites. I built the product on MemberPress, and it was a total disaster.

The content was good, but the experience was terrible.

I thought the right thing to do was to move the product to a platform called Mighty Networks. That turned out to be an even bigger disaster, because the way the platform was built created a customer service nightmare.

Now, after 2 years of failing and learning, I am finally on the verge of relaunching The Copyblogger Academy ... and I feel like I finally got it right.

Here's the problem.

When you create a membership site, you need to charge credit cards. But when you charge someone's credit card, it's not like you get to see the numbers. The information is encrypted in the software.

So if there is ever a change, you have to explain to people that they are still members of the "old" platform even though they have to sign up to a new platform, because their billing info is still stored on the old platform.

So every time I make a change, I have to send a humiliating email to my members telling them about the change and basically admitting that I fucked up. When I do that, a large portion of people cancel.

It's awful and embarrassing and expensive.

So what do I do?

I keep moving forward.

Because that's all any of us can ever do.

I wake up each day and I try to be 1% better than I was yesterday. Now, after 2 and a half years, I truly feel like I'm an expert in marketing, creating, and selling online membership products.

But I never would have learned these lessons if I gave up after my first failure.

Believe me, I fuck up every day. More than you think. When I make these mistakes, they haunt me. I lose sleep and I have anxiety, just like you.

My superpower in life has always been that I am irrationally persistent.

If I can do it, you can too. Believe me.

Love you guys.

Talk to you next week.

Tim
