Published about 1 year ago • 5 min read

Hello there. Tim here.

I just hit my funny bone of the corner of my desk and I think I'm going to die. I wish this were an exaggeration.

1. You are a Media Company

This week, we are examining an amazing case study that will show you why you need to be treating your business like a media company.

Aging Media and the Enterprise of Elderly Care

When you think of media companies, you probably don't think of assisted living, elderly care, or at-home nursing.

If you're like me, you think of ESPN, CNN, TMZ, or even Bloomberg. Media companies are sexy, flashy, relevant, and up to date. They thrive on generating buzz, because the buzz creates clicks on the clicks create revenue.

Nevertheless, Aging Media has built an entire conglomerate of companies totally focused around boring industries that you would never think would be able to generate an audience.

But guess what? This company is KILLING it. Last week, I had a conversation with their CEO and he told me exactly how his companies are monetizing, growing, and thriving.

Let's dig deeper.

The Foolproof Business Model that You Can Use Right Now

First, let's go through all the brands that Aging Media owns. They are ...

  • Senior Living News
  • Skilled Nursing News
  • Home Health Care News
  • Hospice News
  • Behavioral Health Business

Now let's take a look at what all these sites have in common.

First, they all use the same exact theme. The web site design is not fancy. In fact, it's rather boring. However, the theme gives the company an opportunity to showcase their content front and center.

Second, they all have a specific target audience. All the content they produce is written specifically for working professionals within these specialized fields. Aging Media knows exactly who their audience is and who they are serving.

Third, their content is specific to the business of these industries. They are providing value to a targeted group of people and they never veer of course. As a writer, it can be difficult to stay on track because our creative brains want to explore. But this why is I always recommend separating a personal brand from a business brand. Use your personal brand to write creatively, but your business brand should completely dedicate itself to serving the audience.

Lastly, they monetize through sponsorships, events, webinars and white papers. The content serves two purposes. Naturally, the content provides value to their target audience, but it also serves as an "awareness machine" to promote the products and services that Aging Media is selling.

Are you seeing a common theme here? If not - the theme is that Aging Media puts their audience first!

If this company can build a multi million dollar enterprise by creating content in the assisted living space, I'm sure you can build a business in whatever it is you're passionate about. All you have to do is follow the framework that I've laid out for you.

THE FIVE STEP MEDIA MODEL FRAMEWORK

Step 1 - Don't overthink it. The most common mistake you will make is you'll get in your own way by thinking you need some perfect plan. No. The only thing you have to do is commit to creating helpful content.

Step 2 - Decide who you are serving. Who is your audience? Specifically? Who do you want to serve? What is her name? What does she want? What are her goals?

Step 3 - Write every day and publish your work. The writing is easy, the publishing is hard. And guess what? In the beginning, your writing will suck. You will cringe when you publish it and hardly anyone will read it. But you will continue writing and publishing because you want to succeed.

Step 4 - Create products and services that help your audience. This is easier said than done, because product creation is difficult. But I know people who make $200,000 a year by selling $9 eBooks. If you are dedicated to serving your audience, your products and services will continue to improve in time.

Step 5 - Don't quit. Just don't fucking quit. On a long enough timeline, the most successful people are simply the ones who kept going while everyone else gave up.

You are a Media Company

You may not want to believe it, because creating content and publishing your ideas is uncomfortable. That's okay.

But this is the reality. You can either take advantage of the golden opportunity in front of you, or you can watch other people do it.

Either way, this is how business is done in 2023.

I hope you give it a shot.

2. Lessons from Hormozi's Book - $100M Offers

Week's ago, I wrote about how much I enjoyed this book. In fact, I got so much value from it that I read it a second time.

I kept detailed notes on every chapter and over the course of the last 3 weeks, I've completed all the exercises in the book and used it to create my own $100M offer.

In this episode, Ethan and I go through the process step by step, and talk through the offer I put together for my own business.

4. [Book Review] - The Infinite Game by Simon Sinek

The other day, I was beat out on a deal that I was sure I was going to close. The competing company undercut me on price, and since I wasn't willing to come down on my price, I lost the contract.

This bothered the shit out of me. I HATE losing. I paced back and forth in my living room for an hour, wondering what I could have done differently to close the deal.

Then, The Infinite Game popped into my head, and I remembered what the rules of the game really are.

5. Final Thought - "I am Once Again Reminding Myself to Stay Focused"

I'm feeling really good about my work right now. This is the first time I have been in a place where I am comfortable enough with myself to say no to people and to pass up opportunities.

Over the last month, I've said no to many projects that are exciting and have the potential to be successful.

Right now, my priorities are ...

  • my sobriety
  • my family
  • my health
  • my companies
    • Stodzy
    • Copyblogger
    • Sober Nation
    • The rest of my portfolio

It's nice. I feel really content. I feel comfortable with focusing on what's in front of me and I don't have the FOMO that I've always had when I see a shiny new toy come my way.

It's not to say that I don't have my eyes open and it's not to say that I'll never expand outside of my current workload.

I'm an entrepreneur and the more money I make the more I transition into being an investor, so I have full intention of investing in other businesses and opportunities.

But it feels really good to be focused on what's in front of me and I am loving how much more progress I've made with all my attention being focused in one direction.

Love you guys. Talk to you next week.

Tim
